You have wrapped up 2013, and preparing for the New Year at work. Now as you return to the office in 2014, you may consider completing outstanding projects, setting new goals and possibly doing things a little different.
Take time to reflect on your life, both personally and professionally. Are you on your journey to attain your dream and ambitions? Or, are you at least on track - moving in that direction?
Take a self-assessment test: 1. What are my strengths, and weaknesses? 2. Is there anything holding me back from achieving my goals this year, or are my opportunities limited by market forces, a lack of skills or narrow industry opportunities?
Remember every event in 2013 whether bad or good, could be added to your life’s experience. You wouldn’t want to live with regrets! Having regrets for past failures is like living in a prison, while your body may be free; your mind will most likely be locked in a perpetual state of negativity, self-doubt, fear - arresting future progress.
So it is worth going ahead, and pressing the RESET button.
Here are FIVE ways to start the year of right:
Look for ways to self-develop and improve. Finding ways to develop may require taking a course; reading and researching material that is in line with your career goals. Or maybe still, weighing up your career options, earlier on in the year.
Can you make friends easily? Relationships are vital in today’s business and social environment. Consider for a moment, ‘people buy into people first’ before buying into products or services. So learning how to build relationships may just be what you need to develop.
How important is Communication to your career? There is a book written by John Maxwell who asserts,“ Talent is never enough’. While talent and education are key foundational principles for career success, communication drives it. Look through the classified section of your local newspaper, almost every job description, requires a candidate be communication dexterous. Communication is therefore key both socially and professionally!
Brand yourself. Personal ‘branding ‘is the same as corporate branding. Although you may want to carefully consider how you go about building your unique personal brand. You can start by building your reputation on Social Media platforms, with the key objective being, to grow credibility, trust and influence.
Don’t give in, and give up. It is said, many people make New Years resolutions to join the gym, but by the 3rd or 4th January, you can select the parking space, you want. Don’t just set goals you may not keep, you may want to be more intentional when setting them, determined to accomplish them, and disciplined enough to follow them through.
